As digital demand between the U.S. and Mexico continues to scale, the MEX-IX platform has reached a new operational milestone: More 500 Gbps of peak traffic across its interconnection hubs. This achievement reflects the steady demand for high-capacity interconnection at the border and reinforces the role of MEX-IX as a primary hub for the networks, ISPs, and digital platforms serving the region.
As the ecosystem expands, the momentum is driven by two key locations: McAllen and El Paso. Alejandra Moreno, Ecosystem Success and Peering Advocacy Executive at MDC Data Centers, notes that this milestone is about more than just numbers.
“Reaching this level of traffic is not just about volume. It reflects the maturity of the ecosystem and the trust that networks and content platforms place in MEX-IX every day. It shows that interconnection at the border is becoming a core part of how digital services reach Mexico”.

For over a decade, MDC McAllen has been the center of gravity for cross-border connectivity. It remains home to the highest concentration of Mexican and international networks, leading the market in interconnection density and route efficiency.
The new 500 Gbps peak on the MEX-IX is a reflection of this scale. It shows an increasing reliance on neutral, carrier-centric infrastructure to optimize traffic for millions of users across the region.
El Paso: A growing strategic market
While McAllen is the flagship, El Paso has emerged as a major interconnection ecosystem in its own right. What began as a strategic expansion has matured into a platform where carriers and providers choose El Paso for redundancy and path optimization toward northern and western Mexico.
“El Paso is quickly becoming a natural extension of the MEX-IX platform,” Moreno explains. “Its growth shows that networks are looking beyond a single point of interconnection. They want diversity, resilience, and new paths to serve traffic between the U.S. and Mexico”.
To support this demand, MDC will soon share details regarding an upcoming capacity expansion in El Paso.

Learn more about MEX-IXThe strength of the community
The real value of MEX-IX lies in its community. Today, the platform brings together 19 active participants. Global content players like Gcore, Akamai, and CDN77 use the platform to reduce latency into Mexico, while leading Mexican operators, including Bestel, Megacable, Totalplay, Vivaro, and Axtel, strengthen local traffic exchange.
As Moreno points out, “What makes this milestone truly meaningful is the community behind it. From global content platforms to leading Mexican networks, each participant plays a role in making the exchange more valuable for everyone involved”.
Looking ahead
Reaching 500 Gbps signals the continued evolution of MDC’s internet exchange platform. As digital demand accelerates, MEX-IX will continue to expand its capacity across McAllen, El Paso, and future hubs. This includes a potential expansion toward the West Coast, with San Diego identified as a next step to extend the reach of this peering platform.
